Industrial Deafness

Industrial deafness is a broad term that encompasses a variety of hearing problems caused by excessive and/or prolonged exposure to noise in the workplace. It can be split into four types: temporary or permanent hearing loss, tinnitus and acoustic shock (or trauma).

Temporary hearing loss can occur if a worker is exposed to excessive noise for a number of hours, with sufferers experiencing muffled hearing. By moving to a quiet environment for fifteen hours or more, normal hearing will return.

Permanent hearing loss can result from ongoing excessive noise exposure lasting several years. Industries such as construction and engineering create high-risk conditions for employees.

Tinnitus is a constant ringing, whistling or buzzing sensation in the ears, again often related to long-term service in noisy environments. Tinnitus is common in the population, especially in the over 60s.

Acoustic shock can be caused by a single or series of loud noises and can cause permanent damage. Call-centre workers and music industry personnel are a high-risk group.
